Classical Swarams in Spanish Rhythm! Enjoy the lilt, step up with these happy performers!  Indian classical spin on the Spanish hit X by Nicky Jam and J Balvin. This piece combines Spanish and classical elements in a fusion, where Spanish lines are replaced with traditional components of Indian music like Alaap most closely allied in Abheri raga, Adi talam.  The Spanish groove and style, however, still hold. The piece starts with a Spanish rhythm followed by a combination of Swarams and Spanish lyrics alternated by two vocalists. Then the singers move onto the hook which opens into the body of the song. Carnatic or Western, the language of music is universal……. On this day (Nov 11), 27 years ago, Michael Jackson released a single that became a chartbuster. The greatness of this song is that it has lived the test of time & is still so relevant. Messages about racism & inequality, here's Black or White, presented with an Indian touch. This Carnatic Pop Rock fusion begins with a three-part western vocal harmony, followed by the famous guitar riff in this song, but in an Indian way, using Carnatic swarams! Western lyrical notes are blended with Carnatic vocals in kambhoji ragam, Adi talam. Following this is a Carnatic Veena interlude, and then everything gets together for the Outro. MJ’s Black or White was a childhood favourite of Vidyashankar KR who did the music production for this piece. The Western vocals is performed by Anu Romesh and Carnatic vocals is by Sindhuja Bhakthavatsalam with Ahi Ajayan providing vocal support to both. Kavitha Jayaraman is on the veena.
